Location: Daytrip In/Outdoor: Outdoor Activity level: Moderate Features: The Texas Renaissance Festival is a huge event and annual tradition for many fans of days gone by, featuring shows, games, rides, shopping, and food from Medieval to Renaissance times. Cost for a family of four: adult tickets $21 at the gate, children $10 at the gate. You will also need money for food, rides, and souvenirs. We often spend as much as $200 in a day. Best for ages: 0 to adult | ![]() |
The Experience: We love to go to the Renaissance Festival every year, rain or shine. The best part for us is seeing all the elaborate costumes that people wear, including fairies, trolls, knights, courtiers, noblemen, kings, queens, barbarians, and (if my husband's lucky) chain mail bikinis. The Renaissance Festival may not be a favorite of conservative parents, as there are plenty of cleavage displays, well-populated pubs, and shows packed with double entendres. In spite of the raunchier side of the Ren Fest, and the occasional groups of people who have had too much to drink tripping over your sword, it is a great place for kids. The kids will love the joust, complete with cheering sections, real horses, lances, and all the trimmings. They will revel in the rides and activities, such as the elephant ride, camel ride, llama ride, chicken ride (just kidding), the Dizzy Dragon, giant swing, mysterious maze, the petting zoo, the bow and arrow games, kids' jousting ride, and many more. And of course they will love all the foods on a stick, apple dumplings, funnel cake, and tons of other sinful delicacies. Many of the shows, such as the Bird of Prey show and weapons display show, are good for kids as well; buy a program when you first enter so you can find out more about the shows. And make sure to bring enough money for a souvenir, such as a wooden sword or Viking helmet for your child. If you want to go in costume, you can rent one near the entrance or purchase one there. There are many shops featuring beautiful costumes hand-made by the proprietors. You can also buy boots, weapons, flasks, and everything else you need to dress authentically.
Before you go: Leave early, so you can get your money's worth and so you won't have to park miles away from the entrance. Bring lots of cash (although there are ATM's there). Make sure and wear very comfortable shoes; you will be doing lots and lots of walking. Many parents put their kids in wagons and pull them and their extra gear through the festival (strollers are also popular of course). Never stay until the fireworks at the end; you could easily spend over an hour trying to get out of the parking lot if you do. Be prepared for the weather; it often seems to be hotter, colder, or wetter than we'd expected. Walkie talkies or fully charged cellphones are very handy. How to go cheaper: There is special pricing available on opening weekend if you purchase your ticket in advance. In addition, tickets purchased at ticket outlets or on line are quite a bit cheaper than tickets at the gate. Check the website for the ticket outlet locations.
Birthday Parties: Do it yourself parties (not recommended unless doing a family party or a bring-a-friend party, due to long distance). You can have beautiful weddings at the Renaissance Festival, as some friends of ours did.
Accessibility: There is handicapped parking available near the entrance. The sidewalks can accommodate a wheelchair, but they do get very crowded. It may be difficult to get to some places if it gets muddy.
