The Experience: Not all Austin residents know that it's possible to get away to the country twice a week without even leaving the city. We ourselves were skeptical when we first heard about Boggy Creek Farm, but we were delighted to discover that it's true.
When we arrived at this East Austin farm, we discovered a relaxed atmosphere where time seemed to go a little slower, people were a little nicer, and the air was possibly even fresher. The parking spaces are shaded, as is most of the farmyard. If you walk towards your left after parking, you will find the open shed where the owners sell all the farm-grown organic fruit and vegetables. In the barn are farm eggs and other goodies, plus T-shirts and cookbooks. There is bakery bread and other baked goods from Sweetish Hill (on Saturdays), cheeses, tofu, and even goat's milk ice cream. If you arrive later in the morning, some of the produce will be sold out, and they may be out of eggs. Check the website before leaving to see a weekly report of the produce that is currently being harvested.
After you buy your goodies from the friendly owners, walk over to the other side of the house and visit the chickens. The chicken coop is large and filled with dozens of chickens, and there are a few chickens strolling around the barnyard. These roamers eagerly tried to sample the wares the visitors had purchased, especially the bread. There are a few toy tractors left out for kids to play with in the dirt under the large pecan tree, while parents watch from the shaded benches.
Before you go: Bring cash, and consider bringing some small tractors, cars, or cows, if you want to let the kids play under the tree for a while. Be aware that no dogs are allowed, and no smoking. How to go cheaper: Just look around.
Birthday Parties: Do it yourself.
