Location: Southwest, In/Outdoor: Outdoor Activity level: Varies Features: Windmill Run is a small (16 acres) county park with two playscapes, one for younger kids and one for older kids, a hiking trail, a ballfield, and a few picnic tables. Cost for a family of four: free Best for ages: all | ![]() |
The Experience: We like the cozy neighborhood feel of this park. It is uncrowded and occasionally you will find yourself enjoying the park alone. It is well-shaded and good for picnics, as the picnic tables are right by the playscapes so you can watch your kids easily while you finish eating. The wooden playscapes are much more interesting than standard plastic playscapes found in most Austin parks. On the down side, this park seems to attract mosquitoes, perhaps due to some standing water from a large drainage pipe. The tires on the larger playscape leave black marks on your kids' clothes, which wash out.
Before you go: Take sunscreen, water, and bug repellant. How to go cheaper: Not possible.
Birthday Parties: Do it yourself. One day we saw a woman setting up an elaborate trail with various challenges to take along the way for a party she was throwing with a Fear Factor theme.
