St. Elmo Playground

Location: South,
In/Outdoor: Outdoor
Activity level: Varies

Features: St. Elmo playground is an elementary school playground that has joint ownership with Austin Parks and Recreation, so is also listed as a park. It has two playscapes, swings, a softball field, and several benches.

Cost for a family of four: free

Best for ages: all

The Experience: This school playground has more trees than most. The areas around the playscapes were shady, and the benches are in the shade, so they are good to sit and watch your kids. On a weekday afternoon in June when we went there, there were no other people so we had the park to ourselves. Most of the playground is taken up by a softball field with a chain-link fence around it. There was also a drainage ditch running through the middle of the park and mud, which may be related to construction that was being done at the time. There is no shade on the playscapes. The rings on the playscapes were too low for big kids, but may be perfect for younger kids.
