The Experience: We were highly impressed by our first visit to Main Event in July. There is a 28-lane bowling alley when you enter, with its own separate counter to pay and get shoes. There is also a bar across from the bowling alleys and eleven pool tables; later at night the Main Event becomes more of an adult play and date place, with no children allowed after 10 pm. Walking to your right, you will see a large video game and arcade area. If you continue straight, you will end up in the rock climbing area, or if you turn left you will come to the glow golf and laser tag area. Everything was clean and employees were monitoring all the areas, so everything was open on a Wednesday afternoon. We chose to split into groups to try a couple of different activities. Two of us played the glow golf miniature golf game, which was a lot of fun. The whole ceiling is covered by black lights, and all the borders, holes, golf balls, and decorations are painted with fluorescent paint, so everything is glowing in the dark in an otherwise dark room. The course follows a path closed in by partitions, and goes from a space theme to an ocean theme to an Ice Age theme. The course itself was very easy to play, and goes quickly. We were not allowed to bring our two-year-old in, because he was under 42 inches. The employee covering the area did say that if he was in a stroller or we carried him the whole time he could go in. Two of us then tried the laser tag activity. The game starts every 15 minutes, and we were the only ones in there at the time. It is located in a two-story room with stairs at either end and the room is divided by many obstacles and walls. It is fairly dark, so you can see the lasers, and filled with fog. You are given packs to strap on that cover your back and chest, and a gun that is attached to the pack. Your objective is to shoot your opponents as many times as possible. The gun could shoot single-shot or full auto. In team play, you have a limited number of shots, but for fewer people, you play a free-for-all game with unlimited shots. When you shoot someone else, your chest pack announces “good tag” and if you get shot, it plays a sound effect and says “shields up” are you have two seconds to run away, before it announces “shields down.” You're given a score card at the end of your game. You need to be 48 inches tall to participate in laser tag. We checked out the rock climbing area, but did not actually try it. We saw several children climbing the rock walls, mostly elementary-school aged, and a few adults. The rock climbing area is huge, with many different walls to choose from, some shorter and some much taller. The tallest wall is 28 feet high. The parent needs to sign a release of liability for children under age 18. The facility rents rock climbing shoes, included in the cost, so you don't need to worry about what type of shoes you wear in. The climbers were being carefully monitored by employees. The minimum height for rock climbing is 42 inches. The arcade area was a lot of fun, similar to those at Gattitown or Dave and Buster's. There was a fun dunk-the-alien version of Skeeball. The more violent shooting games were located in a room that could only be entered by 18-year-olds or older. The arcade games earn points that can be exchanged for prizes in the prize room. Our favorite part of the arcade was the MaxFlight 2000 ride, a roller coaster simulator. For $3.50 a person, one or two people are strapped into a simulator which is then closed and locked. While you watch a movie of a roller coaster, the machine lifts, lowers, goes sideways, and even flips over completely several times. It was much better than other simulators, because it did turn completely over and take you for a real ride. It was definitely a thrill ride, not recommended for the faint of heart. There is also a 10-seat motion theater located by the MaxFlight.
Before you go: Consider wearing white shirts so they will glow under the black lights for added fun. Wear or bring socks for bowling or rock climbing. Game cards and activities can be purchased with cash or credit cards. There is food available in the snack bar area, such as pizzas and hot dogs. Remember to plan on wrapping up your visit by 10 pm.
