The Experience: The experience at Children's Day Art Park is one that would be fantastic if there were say, fifty children attending. In reality, there are hundreds of children and chaos rules. While waiting for the show to start, there are clowns doing tricks and making balloon animals. There is also an instrument petting zoo set up where kids can touch symphony instruments and try to play them. Lemonade is sold for 10 cents. After the show there is a tent set up nearby where kids can try various craft and art projects. The price is great and it is festive to see the clowns frolicking, bubbles being blown, and free balloons provided by Target floating from many little wrists. The stage is a nice area on the creek that runs through downtown, with stone bench seating in a tiered semicircle around it. The volunteers are nice and helpful. The time is early enough in the morning that it does not get very hot for the first hour or so. I heard one woman telling her friend that she had went there as a child and now she brings her children there.
The main complaint I would have would definitely be the crowd. The day we went it was so packed with people that you could barely walk through the area, and it was almost impossible to find your children if you got separated from them momentarily. If you arrive early, it is not hard to get a good seat in the stands, but if you have kids who don't like to stay seated (like mine), it is very hard to see the show from amid the crowds of people on the patio. It does not seem to be a good activity for toddlers, yet there were many toddlers there. People have a hard time with parking, and I saw many people who had arrived after the show started who could not find the friends they were supposed to meet or anyplace to sit down and watch the show. The whole experience can be frustrating and overwhelming, although I saw many people with calmer children who arrived early, got a good seat, and stayed seated the whole time who enjoyed the show.
Before you go: Bring some quarters for the parking meter, sunscreen, and a light snack. You can bring water or opt for the almost free lemonade. Preferably, only take your older children, especially if they are interested in art and culture. Try to arrive early both for good parking and a good seat. How to go cheaper: Not possible.
Birthday Parties: Do it yourself.
Accessibility: Coming soon.

The Lowdown: An experience that would be very pleasant and provide some almost-free culture and entertainment to your children if there was a way to limit the number of people in attendance.
