The Experience: Enchanted Rock is a strange and fascinating sight, one of the largest formerly underground rock formations in the state. The Native Americans believed that ghost fires flickered on top, and you will understand why there are legends of spiritual presences here when you see this oddly out-of-place dome, which is so huge it covers 640 acres. You will feel so proud of yourself after you climb the steep trail to the top of the dome (425 feet above ground)! The view from the top is magnificent! Kids can make it with frequent rest stops; even our two-year-old made it. There is a cave to explore on the top of the dome. Of course, on a hot day, you will be pretty miserable by the time you reach the top.
The park also offers walk-in tent camping, with water and fire rings provided, or primitive hike-in camping. For those who don't want to stay overnight, there are picnic tables with grills, a group picnic pavilion, and a hiking trail that winds around the rock formations.
Before you go: Choose a cool day, wear good walking shoes, bring a flashlight if you want to go in the small cave at the top, bring lots of water, bring a first-aid kit just in case, and bring a camera. Go early, because the daily number of visitors to the park is limited, and when the limit is reached, no more people will be allowed in, due to soil erosion.How to go cheaper: No options available.
